Drafting & Architectural Design

The drafting technology program uses an innovative hands-on approach to acquire knowledge and develop the skills that are fundamental to the engineering and design professions. This program is currently articulated with the Engineering Design Technology Department at Sacramento City College. Through the use of realistic projects, students will construct 3D models as well as 2D and 3D drawings. They will also use design processes and drafting procedures that closely pattern those found in the industry.

If you are interested in joining one of these classes, you may talk to your counselor about changing classes. You may talk to Mr. Yost for more information on classes or you can visit one of the links below. There is also an Archictural Design Club.

Drafting and Architectural Design Courses

Beginning Mechanical Drafting/CADD (1 year)

In Beginning Mechanical Drafting/CADD students will be introduced to drafting skills and concepts using both drafting boards and computers.

A few of these include:

  • Technical sketching
  • Introduction to AutoCAD 2002 software
  • Basic instrument drawing
  • Prototype drawing development
  • Geometric constructions
  • 3-View development using the computer
  • Orthographic projection (3-View drawing)
  • Oblique and perspective pictorial
  • Pictorial representation representations

Beginning Architectural Design (1 year)

In Beginning Architectural Design students develop techniques that follow the process found in architectural design professions. This class satisfies the district's graduation requirement in fine arts.

Topics include:

  • Freehand technical sketching
  • CADD prototype development
  • Floor plan creation using the computer
  • Block and Wblock (symbols creation)
  • Area studies (room design by activity)

Second semester students design and create an entire contractors set of plans for a weekend retreat cabin using AutoCAD 2002 software. Skills acquired in this program provide students an opportunity to examine career options in many exciting fields.

A few of these include:

  • Architectural design
  • Industrial design
  • Engineering
  • Computer aided drafting/design drafter
  • Interior design
  • Landscape architecture
  • Construction occupations
  • Advanced Architectural Drafting .

Advanced Architectural Design (1 year)

In Advanced Architecural Design, students will refine their techniques of architectural design. This course is similar to the beginning class but advanced moves along faster. Students will create more homes, make more models, and learn new skills in using the AutoCAD 2002 software.

Architectural Design and Graphics (1 year)

In Architectural Design and Graphics, students will take architecture a step further and and learn about the Principles of Design and the Elements of Design. They will design a solution for a camping trip problem they will be given. Students still will also be able to design homes for themselves and clients that will be given.

The Five Elements of Design are:

  • Line
  • Shape
  • Value
  • Texture
  • Color

The Four Principles of Design are:

  • Repitition
  • Contrast
  • Balance
  • Variation
